헨리 워즈워스 롱펠로 (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)시

헨리 워즈워스 롱펠로 (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1807년 2월 27일 ~ 1882년 3월 24일) 는 미국의 시인이다. 〈인생찬가〉나 〈에반젤린〉 등의 시로 잘 알려져 있으며, 단테의 신곡을 미국에서 처음 번역했던 인물이기도 하다.

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary

It rains, and the wind is never weary;

The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,

But at every gust the dead leaves fall,

And the day is dark and dreary.

 

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;

My thoughts still cling to the mouldering Past,

But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,

And the days are dark and dreary.

 

Be still, sad heart! and cease repining;

Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;

Thy fate is the common fate of all,

Into each life some rain must fall,

Some days must be dark and dreary.

날은 춥고 어둡고 쓸쓸하여라 
비는 내리고 바람은 그치지 않고, 
허물어지는 벽에는 담쟁이 덩굴, 
바람이 불 때마다 잎은 날려가네,

내 인생도 춥고, 어둡고, 쓸쓸하네,

내 생각은 허물어지는 과거의 담벽에 붙어 
불어오는 질풍에 젊음의 꿈을 날려 보냈네.

먹구름 뒤에는 밝은 태양이 비치고 있다. 

그대의 운명도 예외는 아닌 것! 
모든 사람의 운명에 얼마의 비는 내리는 것, 
인생이 어둡고 쓸쓸할 때도 있는 것!
