동화-공주와 완두콩

   공주와 완두콩(公主와 豌豆콩, 덴마크어: Prindsessen paa Ærten, 영어: The Princess and the Pea)은 한스 크리스티안 안데르센의 동화 중 하나로, 안데르센의 동화로는 극히 짧은 작품이다.

There was once a handsome prince who wanted to marry a princess - a real princess.

옛날에 공주 그야말로 진정한 공주와 결혼하고 싶어 하는 잘생긴 왕자가 살았습니다.

 

He traveled far and wide to find one and met a great many people, and quite an number of princesses, too.

왕자는 공주를 찾기 위해 세상 멀리까지 돌아다니며 훌륭한 많은 사람들을 만났고, 꽤 많은 공주들도 만나봤습니다.

 

The trouble was that there was always something or other which appeared to be not quite right about the princesses, and was very sad.

문젠 이들 공주들에게 언제나 석연치 않는 이런저런 흠들이 보였고, 그래서 왕자는 슬펐습니다.

 

One night, not long after his return, a terrible storm broke over the palace.

그가 돌아 온지 얼마 안 된 어느 날 밤에, 궁전에 심한 폭풍우가 몰아닥쳤습니다.

 

Lightning flashed, thunder crashed, and the rain poured down.

번개가 번쩍거리고, 천둥도 쳤으며, 비가 억수로 퍼부었습니다.

 

Suddenly, there was a loud knocking at the great front door.

갑자기, 성문을 두드리는 커다란 소리가 났습니다.

 

The old king went himself to see who was there.

늙은 왕은 누가 왔는지 살펴보려고 성문 쪽으로 갔습니다.

 

A girl stood shivering on the doorstep. Water streamed off her hair and down her face and her dress was soaked through.

한 소녀가 떨면서 성문 계단에 서있었습니다. 머리엔 물이 뚝뚝 떨어지고 그녀의 얼굴과 옷은 흠뻑 젖어 있었습니다.

 

"I am a p-p-princess," she said.

“전 고고-공주입니다.” 그녀가 말했습니다.

 

The shivering girl joined the queen and the prince at the fire.

떨고 있는 그 소녀는 불 앞에서 왕비와 왕자와 함께 있게 됐습니다.

 

The prince thought she was very pretty, but wondered if she was a true princess.

왕자는 그녀가 아주 예쁘다고 생각했지만, 진짜 공주인지는 확신할 수 없었습니다.

 

The queen secretly thought: "I believe I can find out whether she really is a princess or not,"

왕비가 내심 생각했습니다: "난 그녀가 진짜 공주인지 아닌지 틀림없이 알아낼 수 있어."

 

While the girl was having a hot bath the queen went to prepare her bedroom.

소녀가 뜨거운 물로 목욕을 하는 동안 왕비는 그녀의 침실을 준비해주러 갔습니다.

 

She sent two maids scurrying to collect mattresses and quilts from all over the palace.

그녀는 궁전 전체의 모든 매트리스와 누비이불을 모으기 위해 하녀들을 급히 보냈습니다.

 

First she placed a dried pea underneath the bottom mattress and then another nineteen were piled onto the bed.

먼저 그녀는 매트리스 아래 마른 완두콩 한 알을 놓고 그런 다음 나머지 19개의 매트리스를 침대 위에 차곡차곡 쌓았습니다.

 

Then the queen told the maids to place twenty feather quilts on top of the mattresses.

그리고나서 왕비는 하녀들에게 20장의 깃털 누비이불을 매트리스들 위에다 깔아 놓으라고 지시했습니다.

 

"Now we shall see how well she sleeps!" said the queen.

“지금부터 그녀가 잠을 편히 자는지 보자꾸나!" 왕비가 말했습니다.

 

The next morning both the king and queen asked if she had slept well.

다음날 왕과 왕비는 그녀에게 잠을 잘 잤냐고 물어 보았습니다.

 

"I'm afraid I had a night," she told them.

“송구하오나 편히 자지 못했사옵니다.” 그녀가 그들에게 말했습니다.

 

"There was a lump un my bed and I tossed and turned all night. Now I am black and blue, with bruises all over my body.

"제 침대에 작은 알갱이 하나가 있어 밤새 내내 이리저리 뒤치고 배겼습니다. 지금 저는 온몸이 시퍼렇게 멍투성이가 됐나이다."

 

The queen was delighted. Only a real princess could have felt a pea through twenty mattresses and twenty quilts.

왕비는 기뻤습니다. 오로지 진정한 공주만이 20개의 매트리스들과 20장의 누비이불들 속에서 한 알의 완두콩을 감지해낼 수 있다고 생각하면서 말이죠.

 

The prince was overjoyed and asked the pretty princess to marry him.

왕자는 매우 기뻐하며 예쁜 공주에게 그와 결혼해주길 청했습니다.

 

They had a wonderful wedding and they lived happily together for many years.

그들은 성대한 결혼식을 했고, 오래오래 행복하게 잘 살았답니다.

 

As for the pea, it was put on display in a glass case in the town museum.

그 완두콩은, 시내 박물관 유리 케이스 안에 전시해 두었다고 합니다.
