‘밤이 와서 어둠이 내리고, 오직 달빛만이 우리를 비출 때도/ 아니, 난 두렵지 않아.’ ‘스탠 바이 미’(Stand By Me)처럼 오랜 세월 사랑받는 팝송이 몇 곡이나 될까. 1961년 발표된 이 노래는 최근까지도 세계인들로부터 사랑받고 있다. 존 레넌 등 수많은 가수들이 리메이크했으며, 리버 피닉스가 주연한 동명의 영화에 삽입곡으로도 사용되어 깊은 인상을 남겼다. 2015년 별세한 벤 이 킹이 부른 이 노래는 미국 의회도서관에 국가기록물로 등재될 정도로 문화적, 역사적 평가를 받았다. 또 그는 재단을 설립해 불우 청소년에게 교육 기회를 제공하고, 소외계층을 지원하는 민간단체를 돕기도 했다.

 

 

사실 이 노래에 더 큰 생명력을 불어넣는 건 음악으로 세상을 바꾸겠다는 캐치프레이즈를 내걸고 활동 중인 ‘플레잉 포 체인지’ 프로젝트팀에 의해서였다. 이미 유튜브 영상으로 전 세계 수백억 뷰를 기록한 이들의 ‘스탠 바이 미’는 보는 것만으로도 흥겹고 감동적이다. 미국 샌타모니카의 한 거리 악사를 시작으로 뉴올리언스와 네덜란드 암스테르담에 이어 프랑스, 브라질, 뉴멕시코, 남아프리카공화국 등 거리의 음악가들이 이어 부르는 ‘스탠 바이 미’는 한마디로 판타스틱하다. 그래미 수상자 겸 음악 엔지니어 마크 존슨이 6명의 스태프를 이끌고 10년간 전 세계를 돌아다닌 끝에 완성된 앨범의 타이틀곡이다. 이 프로젝트에 출연한 거리의 악사들은 세계 각국을 돌면서 콘서트를 여는 등 큰 인기를 얻고 있다. 사람들은 거리에서 노래를 부르는 무명 뮤지션들의 음악성에 감동하고, 그들이 음악을 통해 세상을 바꾸겠다는 뜻에 공감한다.

 

 

이 프로젝트를 통해 설립된 ‘플레잉 포 더 체인지 재단’은 수익금으로 전 세계 소외지역에 음악학교를 세웠다. 이미 네팔, 말리, 가나, 인도네시아 등에 음악학교가 세워져 음악을 통해 세상을 바꿔보자는 이들의 꿈이 하나둘씩 실현되고 있다. 이들의 캠페인에 뜻을 같이하는 U2의 멤버 보노, 밥 말리 등도 목소리를 보태는 등 적극적으로 협력하고 있다. 노래의 힘이 고스란히 느껴지는 사례가 아닐 수 없다  -경향신문-
