In restless dreams I walked alone narrow streets of cobblestone

'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp

When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light that

split the night and touched the sound of silence



And in the naked light I saw ten thousand people, maybe more

People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening

people writing songs that voices never share

And no one dare disturb the sound of silence



"Fools" said I, "You do not know silence like a cancer grows,

Hear my words that I might teach you, Take my arms that

I might reach you."

But my words like silent raindrops fell and echoed

in the wells of silence



And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made

And the sign flashed out its warning in the words that it was forming

And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written

on the subway walls and tenement halls."

And whispered in the sounds of silence

안녕 내 오랜 친구 어둠이여

자네랑 또 얘기하기 위해 다시 왔네.

내가 잠들어 있는 동안 어떤 환영이 살며시 기어들어 와

내 머리 속에 씨앗을 심어 놓았지.

내 머리 속에 심어진 환영은

침묵의 소리 속에 지금도 남아 있다네.



불안한 꿈속에서 난 홀로 걸었지 자갈이 깔린 좁은 골목길을.

가로등 불빛 아래서 차갑고 습한 기운에 옷깃을 올려 세웠지.

네온 불빛에 내 눈이 찔렸을 때

그 네온 불빛이 밤의 어둠을 가르며 침묵의 소리를 깨뜨렸지.



적나라한 불빛 속에서 나는 보았지 만 명 아니, 어쩌면 더 많은 사람들을.

말을 중얼거리기는 하지만 분명한 뜻을 가지지 않고 듣는 채 하지만 경청하지는 않는

사람들의 목소리가 같이하지 않는 불협화음의 노래들을 쓰지요.

그 누구도 감히 침묵의 소리를 깨뜨리지 않지.



"바보들"내가 말했지 "당신들은 몰라요 암과도 같은 침묵이 자라고 있음을.

내가 그대를 가르칠 수 있도록 내 말을 들으시오.

내가 그대에게 닿을 수 있도록 내 손을 잡아요."

하지만 내 말은 소리 없는 빗방울처럼 떨어져

침묵의 샘에서 메아리쳤죠.



사람들은 자기가 만든 네온 신에 허리 굽혀 기도했어.

네온이 만들어내는 단어 중에 경고의 문구가 번쩍거렸지.

네온은 이렇게 쓰여 있었지.

"예언자의 말은 지하철 벽이나

싸구려 아파트 현관에 적혀있다."

침묵의 소리 속에서 속삭이더군.

 

사이먼 & 가펑클이 1964년 발표한 앨범에 수록되었고 1968년 더스틴 호프만이 주연한 영화 '졸업'에 사운드 트랙으로 사용된 곡으로   침묵 바이러스 퇴치라는 저항의 메시지와 시적 가사와 아름다운 선율을 잘 전달하는 명곡입니다. .
